Mail search field animation - how to stop this mistake

I recently updated my OS X to Monterey and it has a really annoying "feature" in Mail. The search field up in the toolbar is no longer a static field for you to type in. It's now a magnifying glass icon that you have to click on, then it animates open to reveal a field for me to type in. So now I have to wait for this animation to happen every time I search, and with my job I search A LOT.

Anyone know how to kill this feature and just have a static field?
