Iphone backup password

Hello. 2 days ago I made a backup of my iphone while trading in old iphone Xr in iStore (Honolulu, on vacation). It was first time using that computer or any macbook as backup. we definitely did not set any password, because we were not asked to by system. I wanted to restore the backup on new iphone and I am not able to do so, bevause I am asked a passord I dont know, because I had not set any! I have lot of stuff in that backup for my work that I need and I dont have the old iphone anymore. Can you help me? I tried various old passwords, incl 0000, 1234 etc… is there really a bug in apple systems which causes this? Any help?

Did you try your work email account password? If you use your device for work and have an employer exchange or Office365 account setup, or an MDM profile, those can require encrypted backups as per your employer’s security policy. They may often default to using your work account password for the backup password.

You have lost the photos.

If you sign into the new phone you will have access to your mail, calendar, reminders, passwords from your cloud services.

If you sent any photos to friends or family by WhatsApp or email they should be available from them.

Going forward turn on iCloud Backup which automatically backs up your phone every night when on WiFi and on charge, The one Euro/dollar a month should be enough storage.

Why? Because if you had dropped the phone on the way into the Honolulu store and smashed it you would be in exactly the same position, except it would not be Apple Store's "fault"

The decoding (paud) software have been running for 3 days now, without success. If it had been any easy combination of numbers (as is code for old iphone) it would have been found. We used all keychain passwords from my and my husbands phones and mcbook. I start to feel crazy, but we know we did not set password in that store, simply because we were paying attetntion and had little time until closure of istore. Any ideas? How long can the password software run before decoding? I need a hacker! We even considered that maybe after 8 days the old phone may still be in Honolulu istore, there is a way how to restore data from phone even after it was deleted…

There are many people in this forum who have the same problem and get answers that they simply dont remember password… I had 128GB data (mostly photos), I have some photos on icloud but not many. There must be some solution. I was thinking - I had iphone 5s long time ago, (that phone was migrated to Xr which I backuped on 8th february) but I dont remember connecting it to my itunes (which I did not used, but it was installed on phone). We have tried all keychain passwords, even old ones. How is it possible that Finder let mi create backup without asking password? I have been crying for whole week because of this, I know it is stupid but there was lot of important things for me.

The phone store should have helped you restore to the new phone before you left the store.

They did it for my daughter - ok it was london.

I would also have kept the old phone as a spare and taken an iCloud backup alongside the PC backup.

I could suggest more that you could have done but unfortunately giving advice after the event can't help you.

  • I am replying to this. We have used apple devices for some time now, I had complete trust for my husband backing it up, even when it was first time using a Finder on mcbook. We have never had any bad experience with apple, on the contrary - the devices communicate and function together in amazing way. That is why we thought that it will be smooth process, and it was - when backup was completed (5 minutes before closing store) the shop assistan took a look and was happy (and we were happy too) that we made it and were able to backup in time and trade in phone Xr. We left for airport then. In amsterdam we realized that I cannot access the backup. We thought that it will have some solution, in the end - there is a proof that backup is mine, it is on our computer, there must be a way!
  • And telling people what they should have done differenťly is not helpful, NOW I know that that was not SAFE way, but I really had no idea how risky it was indeed! I trusted apple functioning. If it asks password I create one and REMEMBER it, not this hunt for some old potentionaly non-existent password. And apple support which tells me that there was password and we had to set it when making backup but we forgot it. Really - we were 3 witnessess there and we would remember what happened 1 day ago!
  • any idea how to solve this? I feel so cheated by apple! I lost all of my data! It is secured on external hardisk in case aliens arrive and there will be someone able to help.

Unfortunately that was the first backup (using itunes or finder) In the past I only manually transfered photos to my Lenovo (windows). But I dont have stored photos from last months.

I would never imagined that using apple device for backup might be more tricky or dangerous as it is.

I contacted apple support in Slovakia (reccomended solution outside apple by phone) and in US - they dont have solution. I have session in local iStore tomorow morning. Iˇ

I need to get access to the photos and videos (from surgeries) which I did not send to friends.

I need to get access to my data stored on my mcbook and encrypted by some apple bug (because I have no idea how that could happen and encryption box would be checked otherwise)

thanks for all replies,

the one thing that would help would be anyones experience with decoding the password (how long and if it was sucessfull at all)

if it is not legal and it is not legal to discuss it here (deleted replies) then apple should come with solution for the loss of data.

because it is ridiculous - you pair couple of your own apple devices and think how wonderfull apple devices work and Woila! All photos lost, not official solution offered.

I know you are not apple support, I am sorry if I sound angry, but I was thinking about getting a divorce in weak moment (it was my husband who choose this way of backup)

If you forget your backup password but don't need access to your backup's contents, you can overwrite it with a new backup:

  1. On your iOS device, go to Settings → General → Reset.
  2. Tap Reset All Settings and enter your iOS passcode.
  3. Follow the steps to reset your settings. This won't affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like display brightness, Home screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes your encrypted backup password.
  4. Connect your device to iTunes again and create a new encrypted backup.

Be aware that this will overwrite any pre-existing iPhone backup you might have, and all data included in them.
