My new magic keyboard function keys do not work on my 27" late 2013 iMac running Catalina 10.15.7. My old keyboard worked fine but I got tired of recharging batteries.

Make sure you bought the keyboard without TouchID. Those keyboards are meant for the new M(x)-based iMacs (Apple Silicon). You want the keyboards that work with Intel-based iMacs:
Make sure your new Magic keyboard isn’t the one for the New Apple Silicon Macs.
I can’t help you to ID your model but a call to Apple Support should be able to help.
It's not about the charging, a new magic keyboard won't function correctly on a 2013 running Catalina. Luckily, I have a 2015 iMac Running Monterey and it works fine on that. My goal in all this was to get rid of the batteries, I was to use the battery-less keyboard from the 2015 on my 2013 so I'm good. Thanks!
If it's been less than 14 days since you purchased it you can return it for a full refund no questions asked. If you qualify call then immediately so you get under the wire.
Either that or get a USB-C to USB Adapter from Apple.
