How do I get to recovery mode. What is this code telling me?

It indicates some type of network or Internet issue. Try connecting the Mac directly to the router using an Ethernet cable and using an appropriate adapter if necessary for a faster more reliable connection which also bypasses hard to troubleshoot WiFi issues. You can also try power cycling your router making sure to wait at least five minutes so your router can finish booting.


Depending on the age of the Mac and whether you have access to another Mac, you can possibly create and use a bootable macOS USB installer:
