What if it says you need more storage but you have 40gb available

I’m trying to backup my phone before I switch to using a new to me more recent model of iPhone... I bought the extra storage on iCloud, giving me 41Gb of space to spare. But it won’t let me backup, saying I don’t have enough space. Everything online says to just buy more space if that’s the case... but I already have?!

That would tend to indicate that 40GB is not sufficient for the amount of data on your phone that needs to be backed up.
