Apple TV home sharing and streaming from my Mac

I've got an Apple TV device connected to the TV.

It's on the same network, with the same log-in as my iMac.

The iMac is running MacOS 12.2.

Apple TV is updated to latest version.

I have a library of ripped DVDs (the physical DVDs are stored in a cupboard) from years ago. I've copied this to a network drive and a local external drive that is attached to my Mac.

How can I stream these to the Apple TV?

I found some old documentation online (which I haven't been able to find again, perhaps it has since been deleted) suggesting I add drive I want to use to iTunes... but, of course, there is no iTunes in MacOS 12.2 and the Music app doesn't appear to have the same options.

The easiest way to accomplish this is to setup VLC Media player on your AppleTV. Once installed, open VLC and go to "Local Network", if your mac does not show up then click on "Connect to Server Generic" highlight SMB, fill in the ip (under server) of your mac, then the user and password (I don't think you need to add the port as it is on your local network). Then save and connect. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes to sort things out and show up, but once configured correctly it works great!

Just make sure to share the folders that your media is in under the sharing prefs on your mac first.

I omitted to say that I have tried setting up both drives using the Media Folder Location option in Apple TV preferences on the Mac. Nothing changes.
