I have recently upgraded my Mac to MacOS Monterey, since then I cannot access Microsoft word or excell without upgrading to a paid subscription, is this correct?

Microsoft Office is not free. If you have an old 32 bit version of Office it will not run on Catalina or newer MacOS. These newer operating systems only run 64 bit apps.

Check the Microsoft site. They have subscription and one time pay versions of Microsoft Office.
