Dear Brody and Phillips, thanks both for the links. Though I had already known about them, therefore I knew my old Mac could have Catalina. However, downloading it via safari wasnt working. Gladlly, this article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 was the most helpful. I restart my iMac and pressed option+command+R and then the screen asking if I wanted to reinstall MacOS appeared. There, if one is conencted to the internet, the system will show you the option to install the last MacOS version compatible with one's hardware, in my case, Catalina.
The info about bit was very good, idk about it. Though I guess for me it doesnt matter. I wonder if one can make downgrade without using time machine ehehheeh

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.
With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install. For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.
Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.
macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements - if this computer is Not Listed - it Doesn't Not Qualify
macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements
macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements
Make Time Machine Backup is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS
Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.
Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may required update or upGrades to 64 Bit Versions.
Downgrade - one can only downgrade to the version equal to or greater than the version the Computer Originally came installed with a New.
That said - if the computer was Brand New and came with macOS Sierra version 10.12 - that would be the Oldest version the computer could be downgraded to.
Is your machine compatible?
Everything you need to know before upgrading to Catalina is here.
Downgrading is a different story.
