Turn off automatic iphone backup

How do I turn off the automatic iphone backup on my mac? I want to see the backup window, but it is not showing in Finder. The phone backs up, but the window is blank. I have an iMac 2019, v 12.2.1 and iphone 12 mini, v 15.3.1.

iMac, OS X 10.11

I wanted to turn off the automatic backup, but could not do it, because (for some unknown reason) the backup window disappeared from Finder after my phone completed the backup. After several weeks, I decided to try again and the backup window was back (visible). Once I could see the backup window/menu, I was able to deselect "automatically sync when this phone is connected."
