When I am sitting next to my husband, my airpods pick up the sound from his iphone and not mine.
How can I stop this?

Then I suggest that you first unpair them from yours; reset them, and then, pair them to your iPhone again.
Also, you don't both share the same Apple ID, do you? If so, you shouldn't as this would complicate things.

Make sure that he doesn't pair these AirPods to his phone.
