Hello daisey241,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities and for reviewing the related article, Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. We'd like to offer our support with Messages.

To isolate this issue further, we have a couple steps in mind. For instance, consider whether this happens with all message threads, or only with that one thread. If it only happens with that one message thread, consider starting a new thread to see if the behavior continues.

Alternatively, if it happens with all message threads, try restarting the Messages app and restarting the iPhone.

Quit and reopen an app on iPhone

Restart your iPhone

From there, let's be sure the device is fully updated since fixes are included with each update. If an update is available, we suggest having a current backup to iCloud or to a computer, first.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
