I am trying to back up my 12 mini. I have never backed it up before. I purchased 50GB iCloud storage. It is taking hours. It has been backing up since 9PM last night and by this morning it said it would take 16 more hours. That cant be normal. I have a lot of pictures but less that my wife and her phone backed up in about an hour.

It it plugged in, connected to Wi-Fi, and NOT in Low Power Mode? All of these conditions must be met or the backup will pause. And how fast is your Wi-Fi? A first backup will take longer than subsequent backups, as after the first backup only changes are backed up. But the first backup still should take under an hour.

I back up to both iCloud and my computer (Belt & Suspenders philosophy). If you back up to your computer check to encrypt the backup, and be careful to write down the password, as there is no way to recover it or reset it without the current password.
If the backup isn’t encrypted sensitive data, such as health app data and passwords, is not included in the backup.
It depends on the two following facts.
First time backup on iCloud does always take time.
