I am unable to download Microsoft’s word on my tablet ,it keeps telling me about my storage usage but I have not used up that much space

Are you certain that your free-space is on your iPad - and you are not simply looking at your available iCloud storage?
You can, subscribe to a higher tier of iCloud storage - but this is not a substitute for internal storage.
If your internal storage is full, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.
