Apple Watch Battery Overheat

My Series 4 apple watch worked flawlessly for 3 years and suddenly overheated while charging. I replaced the charger to eliminate that as a cause. Same result...battery failed to charge and overheated. Apple sent a box for submitting the watch for repair/replacement. I received a replacement watch with no information as to cause of overheat nor whether battery replacement was an option. Since the watch was out of the initial warranty period I was charged for the cost of the replacement. Seems the overheating battery is a known problem that IMO is a manufacturing defect that should be covered. Anyone out there with similar experience?

There must have been something else wrong with your Apple Watch, if you had to buy a replacement watch. Apple has pricing for just a battery replacement (at least in the US) and it is significantly less than a full watch replacement.

See this link and scan down to battery replacement --> watch Service Pricing - Apple Support

As you can see, at least in the US, if all that is needed is the battery service, it costs $79. However, the fact they replaced the watch and you paid what you paid, would indicate there was more wrong with your watch than just the battery. And you didn't have to pay for a replacement watch. They must have given you the option to not repair your watch (replace it actually for the fee you paid) and you could have recycled the watch and used the money towards the purchase of a brand new watch.

Batteries in devices are considered consumable parts. Your watch had a one year manufacturers warranty, which during that time had there been an issue, which was caused by a manufacturing defect, it would have been covered by warranty. Three years later however, to expect the battery to not need to be replaced is unrealistic and certainly to be taken care of under warranty, even less so.

More details for clarity: My watch performed flawlessly since Dec 2018 when I received it. Several nights ago I charged it for about 3 hrs and set it on my kitchen counter fully charged for the night as I do every night. The next morning I put it on and noticed it needed to be charged! So I put it on the charger and it never charged but got very hot (114 deg F). I let it cool and tried it again with same result. Put it on a second charger to ensure it was not the problem. Watch would not charge and would not turn on no matter how I tried to reset it. Contacted Apple support and the gave me two options: 1) take it to Best Buy and let them look at it to replace battery or 2) Apple would mail a box to me to return for maintenance. I took it to BB and they said I should just send it to Apple because they are only vendors and not Apple support! Back to Apple I went however before they would send this "special box" I was required to place a credit card charge for the replacement cost ($445.85) of the watch in case the battery could not be replaced for $79. The watch appeared to be in perfect condition. Obviously they just sent the replacement watch with no explanation as to what was wrong with the watch. Follow up call to Apple support revealed zero information on that repair ticket. That is it! I will say that the turnaround time was fantastic. Mailed it on Monday afternoon and received the replacement Thursday afternoon. Thank you Fedex!

Not sure why Best Buy wouldn't take of you. They are just as Apple Authorized for service as Apple is.

If you're not pleased with how this all took place, use the Get Support button at the top of this page and tell Apple you would have preferred to be given the option to not have your watch replaced and you would have preferred instead to buy a brand new watch, if that would be the preferable solution for you.

I appreciate your response and am not in disagreement. However nowhere did Apple tell me I should have my battery replaced at a particular interval. If they are selling $900+ watches (SS 44MM Space Grey) and expect me to also pay $450 when the battery destroys it I feel I should at least have had the opportunity to apply the money to a newer series watch. Just venting a little bit.
