Unfortunately, my iPhone screen just broke. I wanted to back it up (I have not been using iCloud recently), but in order to connect the phone to my macbook, I need to enter the code. How can I unlock my phone? For extra information, I need to enter the code to use face id so that isn't working.

If you are not able to enter Passcode then there is nothing that can be done except to get the screen repaired.
