So I upgraded my iphone yesterday, and before I did it, I asked the sales worker do voicemails transfer over, he said yes. That is not true. Is there a way to retrieve it? My dad passed away and I have a lot of meaningful voicemails.

No. As far as I know, unless things have changed, voicemail messages are not backed up as they reside on your carrier's server. But, iCloud does backup your visual voicemail password. So, if you restore your device from a backup, your voicemail should populate again.
If you exported your messages to store outside of your carrier's system (which is a good idea since many carriers automatically delete messages after a period of time), then they may be backed up as part of your files/documents/etc.
Try calling your voicemail and listening to what is there. For some carriers simply dialing "1" will access voicemail.

Likely not, if you didn't back up your messages. Check with your carrier.
How do i know if I backed it up? Like is there a button for voicemail sync?
