USB storage device disconnecting

So I foolishly removed my 256GB USB drive without ejecting it first out of the USB C port of my M1 Mac mini running Monterey, now I can’t see any files in it and is keeps saying it has disconnected a few times an hour. I have tried it on different ports and it does the same. Disc utility first aid cannot repair it.

I plugged it into my 2012 IMac and is works fine, and repairs with first aid, but still doesn’t work after that on the Mac mini.

How can I get this to work on my Mac mini again?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance…

Monterey is very sensitive to drive configurations. I would copy the files from it (if you want them) to another drive using your 2012 Mac then reformat the drive to APFS and see if it is recognized in Disk Utilities. Also, check to be sure the cable and/or adapter is good as Monterey M1 units are sensitive to robust connections.

Hello Markio16,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

If we understand your post correctly, you removed your USB drive without ejecting it and now you're unable to see files and it keeps saying disconnected. We'd like to help!

We recommend starting in safe mode. Sometimes just starting in this mode and then restarting can resolve issues like this: How to use safe mode on your Mac

You can also create another user on your Mac and test to see if you experience the same issue.
