Installing macOS Monterey

Hello!

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with a new battery and disk. It's currently running Catalina 10.15.1 and I'm hoping to install Monterey. When I reach the step in the image below, this problem pops up and Im not sure what to do. I tried quitting the installation program and also restarting the laptop. If anyone has any advice, would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Sophie

Ok, how long is that supposed to take though?

The answer to that depends greatly on how much data is being encrypted, and how fast your storage I/O is.

System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FileVault should have a progress indicator. There've been reports that display is sometimes also not entirely accurate.

As for the usual duration, a day is not unheard of, particularly with lots of data and slow storage and a slow processor.

changing the state of encrypted/decrypted takes under a minute. Once changed, your drive reads in groups of data and writes them back out in the other state. This process must run to completion, and can not be canceled.

MacOS can be very clever about a lot of things with the drive partially encrypted, but installing a new version of MacOS during the conversion is not possible.

The process continues in the background, ONLY during the times your Mac is awake and not extremely busy doing other tasks. If it sleeps all night, no progress on conversion will be made while it is asleep.
