Will my 2014 MacBook Pro be able to support the new iOS system?

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm unable to backup my phone via iTunes on my MacBook because it is not uptodate with the latest software (currently has Catalina). Any advice on how I can backup my phone without updating my Mac? I've heard horror stories of having to purchase a new computer when updating with a new iOS system on an old computer.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15
