Macintosh HD appears to be duplicated

Desktop icon for Mac hard disk seems to have duplicated itself. The duplicated disk was labeled "Macintosh HD – Data". As far as I could tell it was identical. I dragged to the trash and selected empty trash and it's been deleting the million plus files since then. I'mm startingbto worry that I should not have begun the process of deleting this disk and files. Anyone have information on this? Thank you.
