swollen battery - macbook 2017 retina

Finally was able to visit my Mom and discovered that her 2017 12” MacBook Retina’s lid was not closing.

It looks like the keyboard was bulged out, so I looked at the bottoms to see it was bent “in” but it wasn’t.

After researching, I discovered that there was a lot of MBP 13” computers that had this problem - enough that Apple created a battery replacement program.

I called support to see what program is available for MB computers and was told that there is no such program.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Does anyone know if a class action lawsuit has been filed?

I’m concerned that a faulty battery is about to cause a fire.

Hi, gmkovich, I don't know if a class action lawsuit has been filed, and/or if anyone else has this issue. This is the only notice I could find about 13" MacBook retina's from about 2017 and batteries (see Link)13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Battery Replacement Program - Apple Support... you'd have to fill in your Mom's serial number for her 2017 MacBook Retina and see if it qualifies... you are correct to be concerned about a faulty battery that might cause a fire. your Mom (or you) should book an appointment with your local Genius Bar or AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider), take in her 2017 MacBook Retina for service and to get the battery replaced...

hope this helps you

First of all - DO NOT USE THE DEVICE UNDER ANY CONDITION as this is not safe at all.

There is no program for your model MacBook, BUT this does not mean that the device will not be repaired free of charge. The engineers in service must check the reasons.

What you have to do is just set up a service for the device.

When a battery fails, the macOS will generate warnings that battery needs attention. If those warnings are ignored, you run the risk of having the battery swell to the point that physical damage to the Mac may occur. Such damage is unlikely to be repaired under warranty especially if it is beyond Apple Care coverage.

In my case, my 2015 12" MacBook is currently on its 2nd battery replacement.
