Apple Express replacement and irrepairable phone

Thanks in advice. I have AppleCare+. IPhone accidentally fell out of my pocket and was backed over so the phone isn't functional. Front and back cracked, wont charge, siri doesn't work....so I don't think the phone is able to be repaired. That being said after I pay the $99 fee for the "other damage" and request an express exchange the procedure is for Apple to send me a service phone and then I return the phone that isn't working. If it is determined that the phone can't be repaired what happens next? Am I sent a new phone and then I return the service phone to them? I've heard two different things. I've heard Apple never replaces an IPhone with a used one, and I've heard the replacement could be a used one or a new one. I mean paying for Apple+ I really don't want a phone replaced with a refurbished or service phone. Anyone have any idea how that whole process works? Thanks in advance

It will be a service replacement unit with a modified model number starting with an N. Other than that it can be new or "refurbished", although the usual standard is that the battery will be new regardless. Refurbished can mean anything, but there are standards. It could have been anything from a device that was returned within the 14 day return period, can't be sold as new, and just received a new battery. It could be made from good condition parts plus a new screen or case.

It doesn't matter if your device is repairable or not. The service model is that they require an exchange of the damaged or defective device. If it can be repaired and/or otherwise salvaged for usable parts, Apple will do that. If it's a complete loss, it's just folded in as a cost of doing business. Doesn't matter if it's just the back glass cracked where Apple can still salvage the front screen assembly and logic board or it's damaged to the point where no parts are salvagable.

My understanding about Express Replacement is that they'll send it out first along with a required charge to a credit card for the full retail price. When the exchange is received, they'll return the amount back to the credit card, minus the AppleCare+ fee.
