Read receipts turn off automatically

I have an iPhone 11 Pro max, currently on iOS 15.3.1. Prior to this update, I’ve had this happen too. It happened tonight, I was messaging with a friend and was in and out of iMessage and her read receipts got turned off automatically!! It’s the second time in a month that this has happened. I did not turn them off. And they turned off. How can this be happening??
