Phone Error: This phone number has been used too many times. Choose a different number.

Hello Apple Community,

I recently encountered this error when attempting to setup an Apple ID for myself during the Two-Factor stage.. I setup iPads for my work and had to enter my personal number in during the initial setup. I went into an old work Apple ID and removed my cell number from the work Two-Factor page. Now that I have freed my number from an old account I still cannot add my number to my personal account.

What can be done? Does it take a few days to register that my number has an open slot? I chatted with support twice and they are pretty clueless. My only option is to get a new cell number which is pretty ridiculous.

Thanks!

Greetings, amarcus22!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! From your post, we can see you've gotten an error message when trying to set up a personal Apple ID. It will not allow you to continue based on the number of times that phone number has been used.

For this issue, we'd suggest contacting Apple: Contact Apple Support. They'd be able to check into your previous accounts with you to see why you're unable to add the phone number.

Take care!
