Extracting-Converting VOB's For Final Cut

Hello

I'm an older Apple user/editor (with a new ID). Looking to extract/convert VOB files off a DVD (Standard Def) to a compatible file for FC Pro 6.0.6

I've converted two different files using Wondershare on a PC (one MPEG2) and the other (H264.AAC) both Quick Time Files. Both are recognized by QT and FC in the Apple environment. Both however require Render time.

Why am I using a PC to extract the files? Merely to save running time on my older Mac Desktops. Would it make any difference (regarding render time), if I used Stream Clip and extracted the files on the Mac?

Thank You

I'm not sure what you mean by Render time. The time to extract and transcode (rip) files from the DVD? Or do you mean the ripped files requires converting to use in the legacy version of Final Cut Studio? I haven't used MPEG StreamClip (if that's the Stream Clip you're referencing) in a long time so I don't know how it would do. You might also have a look at Handbrake.

Hello and thanx for the reply ...

My apologies: The render time becomes necessary after the clip has been inserted onto the FC timeline. If the piece is lengthy (subject to editing), then the render time could be substantial. So again my question refers to possibly reducing the render time somehow? Perhaps I should extract and convert those VOB's using stream clip within an Apple environment? But would it make any difference? Are there any other options to reduce the render time? As I explained I'm using Wondershare in a PC to create the QT files.

Thanx Again!

Hello and thanx for the reply ...

Rendering 'is' necessary or the clip will simply not play. There are 'no' effects applied. This is all straight up standard def 720x480. It may be related with the clip settings? That's why I'm asking if it would matter if I did the VOB extract within the Apple environment using Stream Clip? I'm not sure that would matter? As I stated I'm using wondershare in a PC. There is quite a bit of extraction neccessary; (many DVD's need to be copied and converted for a documentary). The exports are all Quick Time Files ...
