Energy Saver shutdown interrupted by connected users

We have a Mac mini running Big Sur and acting as a file server. We want the server to shut down in the evening and restart in the mornings. So we set up Energy Saver to do just that.

We tested it out, but the shutdown gets interrupted if ANY user/computer is still connected.

Obviously, we want the server to shutdown anyways and disconnect any users. Not much of an "energy saver" if it's so easy to not actually shut down on its own.

How can we do that?

Thank you for a seemingly good, but in the end totally useless reply.

It's a file server as I mentioned so nobody will sit in front of it. It's actually not even connected to a screen. Having to manually click something is the opposite of having it "scheduled". Scheduled means you exactly DON'T have to be there for it.

As for having users disconnect, well that is the problem. The connection happens automatically when people start their clients. Often machines are left on, but not used any longer.

So yeah, thanks for taking the time to write a reply where the one sentence that actually tries to say something useful is nonsense in our case and a link to an article to something I have already done quite obviously.

You could have just said: Unfortunately, there is no way around it.

Hello studio_jhh,

Apple Support Communities is a wonderful place for help with Energy Saver on your Mac. From the description, it sounds as though you’ve set an Energy Saver schedule, and at the scheduled time to shut down the Mac does not power off due to a user being connected to the Mac.

With the prompt you’re seeing there are a couple of options to allow the Mac to shut down at the scheduled time. If a user is connected to the Mac at that time, they can click Shut Down in the window that appears, or they would have to disconnect from the Mac prior to the scheduled shut down. More information about Energy Saver preferences can be found in the following article.
