How to find out what process is running on my Menu Bar?

Hi, I am using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) running on OSX 12.2.1 and I have noticed since yesterday that there's a gap between my Menu Bar items.

Nothing happens when I click onto it (It only shows the space highlighted) and I can't see to find any StartupItems from Systems/User Library, all the items on the user library is already shown as icons on my Menu Bar so I have no idea what is actually running in the background.

I have searched earlier discussions and tried restarting SystemUIServer on Terminal and running the codes below on Apple Script (Result in screenshot) but still no way of getting rid of it.


Terminal Command I ran:

killall -KILL SystemUIServer


Apple Script Code:

tell application "System Events"

tell the front menu bar of process "SystemUIServer"

set menu_extras to value of attribute "AXDescription" of menu bar items

end tell

end tell

set {TID, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's text item delimiters, return}

Can anyone advice if there's malicious software running in the background unable to be detected by the free AVG antivirus? Please help!

1 - Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.


2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?


3 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.


4 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then this appears to be a System Wide issue.


5 - Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.


The application is free or paid from added features. 


Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).



It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.


 The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. 


Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )


We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.


Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.


This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.


This will include CleanMyMac , This will include BitDefender


This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software


Intego AntiVirus, McAfee, MacKeeper, Avast AntiVirus


Ad Guard, Webroot


The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

I would have expected to see a crash log entry, but none appear in that report. As it states there do appear to be a great many system modifications though, any number of which might be responsible. Among the first I suggest getting rid of are "AdGuard" and "McAfee". Follow their uninstallation instructions. Same goes for "AppCleaner". It may be overly broad advice, but stay away anything with "cleaner" in its name. You don't need it.


Many others are old / orphaned and most likely no longer supported: "intelhaxm", "Soundflower", and "Megaupdater" for example but frankly there are too many others to specifically enumerate. Perhaps you perceive a benefit from using them, but no one needs things that don't directly enable or enhance whatever you need your Mac to do. There are millions of apps and system "enhancements" that make dubious claims regarding their worth. Apple does not build Macs that require such things. All they can do is interfere with the way they're designed to work.


If you want assistance, the following is what I recommend with a Mac that has been as extensively modified as that one. You certainly don't have to follow it if you decide it would be easier to uninstall those things in a piecemeal fashion.


  • Erase the Mac using macOS Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
  • To erase and install macOS read How to reinstall macOS on your Mac.
    • Follow the instructions to completely erase that Mac's internal storage: Erase a volume using Disk Utility.
    • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
    • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
    • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
  • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
  • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

Restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" as BlueberryLover suggested: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Determine if it appears while in that mode.


Then, restart your Mac normally. Describe your results.


Then, if it continues to appear consider Using EtreCheck - Apple Community. Be sure to enable "full disk access" which will examine the entire system. That's required since you already confirmed its presence after creating another user and logging in under that Account.

If it is still running in Safe Mode, then it isn't going to be any Launch Daemon or Launch Agent. Those won't run in Safe Mode.


However, regular apps do still run in Safe Mode. So you want to look at the Login Items in your EtreCheck report. It is one of those. Look for anything listed as "Running" or "Loaded". It should be one of those.
