Preview icon stays in dock after being closed

Haven't seen my exact issue posted.

The preview icon stays in dock after closing the window. I have to then click on the icon and press 'quit' to get it out of the dock.

In System Preferences>Dock & Menu Bar> I've already unchecked 'Show recent applications in Dock'

This happens with other apps occasionally too, but it's most annoying with the Preview window.

I want it set up so when I close a window it fully closes, and only the apps or settings I ask to stay in the dock stay there.

Help? Thank you.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not trying to put it in the trash.

My issue is that 'closing' the window doesn't seem to close it fully, it remains in the Dock. I don't want it to remain in the Dock, I want it to close fully.

Whether the white dot is there or not, it still stays there until I click the icon in the Dock and 'quit' it.

I want to set up my mac so that when I 'x' out of the image being previewed, the preview window fully closes, including the icon in the Dock.

Any other suggestions?

Maybe you can explain more fully how this is an issue...

Recently used apps you can turn off >System Preferences>Dock & menubar

Thanks for your reply.

Yes that was the first thing I did.

I think I just figured it out. I have to close the preview window, and folder, and then click on the desktop somewhere and that closes the icon in the dock. Sometimes there is a delay in it closing, but it does seem to close. Also, clicking on anything else like opening other windows doesn't let it close, it just stays open.

So the solution seems to be

  1. System Preferences>Dock & Menu Bar> 'Show recent applications in Dock'
  2. Control click on the icon in the Dock. Select "Options". Make sure "Keep in Dock" is not checked
  3. Shut the windows, then click somewhere random on the desktop and it should eventually close.

Kinda strange~
