Mac working much faster and more reliable on safe mode

Hi, I have a problem with my Mac Mini M1. Lately it has been working very unreliably with apps crushing, or working very slow. I have problems with computer asking me for keychain login password, loosing my bluetooth connection to the mouse, loosing dots under open apps (even if the app is running right click will show me option as it was closed), some apps including finder are crashing, sometimes I cannot do the shutdown so I need to do the hard reset (occasionally terminal shutdown works)... and stuff like this... It happens at random times, usually when I have more tasks going on. I have called the Apple support, and they suggested reinstalling the system which I did, first aid in disk management, but this didn't really help. When I boot it the safe mode it works there OK, even faster than usual. So I guess it is a software related thing, but I don't know hot to diagnose it and fix it.

I do have lost of USB devices installed on the system. In last month I have upgraded to Monterey and purchased Stream deck and installed Keyboard Maestro (before on Big Sur I didn't have such problems).

Does anybody have any suggestion how to proceed?

Here is also a report by EtreCheck attached

Thank You!!

The report includes:

[Loaded] com.piriform.ccleaner.CCleanerAgent.plist (Piriform Ltd - installed 2022-02-21)

Cleaning apps can cause problems. I agree with others to backup and then erase your startup drive and reinstall macOS and restore only your User, not apps or system settings.

Reinstall any apps you need.

If you look right at the top of the report, you will see:

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

System Integrity Protection disabled - System Integrity Protection is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Automatic updates disabled - Automatic updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Security updates disabled - Security updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

So basically all security has been turned off... why, oh why?????

Please restore the system security, and do not install any third party "antivirus", or "cleaners" - at some point, you seem have installed avira, and subsequently uninstalled it.

See Effective defenses against malware and other threats

You also have a huge number of reported crashes, high cpu usage, and applications hanging.

You do have Chrome and video applications (Premiere Pro) on this system.

It is known that Chrome and, in particular, the "keystone" daemons that it installs, completely hog the system videotoolbox, for no sane reason, and cause any video applications to crash or hang, even lose pieces of functionality. Yes, this seems insane, but see how and why this happens, and how to uninstall: https://chromeisbad.com

I strongly recommend that you make full backups, and do an erase and install, followed by migrating ONLY the user accounts.

Since you are running in Monterey, you can restore a clean system without reformatting or anything.

OK, I will definitely try a full format... but I feel it can be also some software compatibility issue... does anyone see any possible issue in the Etre report?

Your EtreCheck report is showing great performance. If you are experiencing less than that, and crashing, then the cause is almost certainly a software incompatibility. Normally Safe Mode runs much more slowly than normal.

I agree that a full erase and reinstall would be the best approach. However, I don't recommend restoring from backup. That could put you right back in the same place. You have to identify what was causing the problem. Make sure to save your EtreCheck report. Generally speaking, if you are having a problem, and that problem is software, then it is going to be listed on your EtreCheck report. It may not be identified with "HERE! This is the problem" but it will be one of the things listed. If not, then it is a hardware problem. But since your machine works good in Safe Mode, then it probably isn't a hardware problem.

And don't disable SIP. Keep security updates enabled. Only reinstall the software that you absolutely require. And make sure you know how to uninstall it, if necessary.

With such a mess I'd backup, erase the volumes as APFS GUID (or maybe the whole SSD device (if that is still OK in M1 Macs?)), and do a clean install from a bootable flash drive. Then run it for a few days with no extra installs or peripherals. Then reinstall user data files and re-install apps one-by-one and again run it for a few days in between. Do not install any cleaners, virus apps etc. Install some other browser than Chrome (Firefox, for example).

According to that last EtreCheck report, the cause was Google Drive. That is a low-level system modification app that is deeply embedded in the file system. When it crashes repeatedly like that, it could easily lock up the file system and cause the problems you describe.

To be honest, these kinds of low-level system modifications are literally what built this site. They are definitely what would be framed in an "our founder" picture hanging on the wall of the EtreCheck board room.

OK, thanks for suggestion. I think Google Drive could be the issue, I have noticed that sometimes it accessing some other hard drives on my system, occasionally it have some huge cache files (even if it says it has synced everything), and sometimes it is using a lot of RAM. Yesterday I have talked with google and I have removed google drive, cleaned all the files and cache and later reinstall it back. I will see if I will have the issue again... in case I do I will try to uninstall it and use google drive differently.

I will let you know.

Matti: I understand this would resolve the issue but I have lots of work to do and I just don't have a couple of weeks to reinstall everything and test programs one by one and diagnose issues...

That's basically what safe mode is made to do. A solution that you should try is to completely format the machine's storage device then do command+r on boot up to restore it back to Monterey or Big Sur. If this issue still persists I recommend going to an Apple Authorized Service center to have the device checked out. Hope this helps!

Hi, thank you both for looking at my case!

Luis, find that all the security turned off is a bit strange I am quite sure I haven't done this myself.

I remember turning off the automatic updates, but I am sure I left check for updates, and download updates on...

Also I am not sure what is with the "Apple security disabled"... about a month ago I have received notification on my phone that somebody is trying to sing in with my Apple ID somewhere from China. I pressed block and following morning changed the Apple id Password and enter new password on all my devices. I do have two factor authentication on, so I though I am safe, but I am not sure if this is also somehow related to all of the problems I am having...

I have installed Avira to do the check for any malware and then removed it because I don't want it eating my system resources.

I agree Chrome is often a problem and I when I do some intensive video editing I turn it off, but I can't do a full uninstall because I also do some web developing and it is the most used browser...

To both Luis and Etre... doing a full format and installing all the software back manually will be my last resort, because last time I have done this it took more than 2 weeks to restore everything back... I also have a few deadlines in next weeks and I just can't take the time to do this... I use a lot of different software with lots of plugins and custom settings, so it makes this complicated. Also this issues reappear after several hours of usage... If I will install everything back it will looks like it is working, but after a day it can go back to this and I will have no idea which specific program is making the issue, so I will be exactly where I am now... I can make a backup now, and do clean install and restore from this backup, but again I doubt it will really help. But I can definitely do this and it won't take me too much time...

Etre basically use all of the software installed. It is not much there I can leave uninstalled (or uninstall it now)...

Hi, I have done this on Saturday. The computer was on till today, I used it whole day yesterday without problems.

But it just happened again. (Computer stopped responding, I lost the mouse, comm center asked me for password, got back the mouse, finder was unresponsive, I could open terminal the do the shutdown there.

So... I guess it is not solved yet.

I will attach another report.
