Quicktime crashes playing .mov on new computer

I've been having no problems for years playing mov files from my cameras with QuickTime on my older MacBook Pros up to Mojave OS. I just bought a new MacBook Pro running Monterey and the video files open fine and I can scan through the video, but the instant I press "play" QuickTime crashes to desktop.

How do I solve this issue? Do I need to junk QuickTime on this machine for something else?

Hello Seehorse,

We understand you’re encountering an issue playing videos in QuickTime.

Does this happen with all video files? For example, if you did a screen recording on your Mac and tried to play it in QuickTime does that also happen?

Have you had a chance to install all the incremental macOS Monterey updates on your new Mac? Update macOS on Mac

Thanks.

Seehorse,

The easiest way to check on safe mode is in from Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report > Software. There is shows you the Boot Mode and will say either Normal or Safe Mode/Boot. It sounds like you were in safe mode though and we appreciate you testing there.

If you have iMovie installed on your Mac, are you able to test one of those ProRes files in iMovie to see if it plays OK? We ask that to isolate the video files.

Should things work OK there, we’re going to recommend reaching out to Apple Support to further raise the situation with QuickTime and investigate the issue. Contact Apple Support

Thank you.

It's running 12.1 MacOS and it's as it came out of the box, I haven't updated the OS yet, I bought it a couple days ago. Quicktime is happy to play mp4 files and will scan through mov files without issue but the instant I press spacebar to play a mov I get a crash to desktop.

I'm currently at a show that I'm webcasting and this machine was bought when one of my older ones started getting flakey. I'm working almost exclusively with native mov camera files and some transcoded mp4 versions. About half of the mov are ProRes and the rest are JVC mov format, which is basically h264 with a mov wrapper.

My older MacBook Pro's handle all these files without issue. I have the Adobe Suite on most of them, including the new machine; mostly for Premiere and Media Encoder. The old machines are running various versions of MacOS, the newest being Mojave and the older ones ranging back probably about 4 generations.

I've tried repeatedly to boot safe mode from the directions. I'm unsure if it succeeded as I got no indication of safe mode but several items are missing from the top menu bar such as dropbox and a few others.

On the off chance it's just not telling me it's in safe mode I tried again to play clips. The result is the same, the mp4 and the camera raw mov's play fine while the ProRes mov clips can be opened and scrolled through but instantly crash to desktop if I hit play.

It's been a bit frustrating and I've had to use the 2013 machine to get the work done while using the new one to handle a webcast. It appears to me that the new machine has a newer version of QuickTime than the older ones. The older machine has version 10.5 935.5 while the new one is 10.5 1110.4.21
