You've downloaded an updater for 10.13, not the whole installer...

No you don't start with 10.13 which is no longer available. High Sierra 10.13.6 is the only available version.

Hi dialabrain,
I'm trying this too. I click on the link from this page, which opens the Mac App Store to the page for downloading the High Sierra installer. But when I click on the 'get' button it pushes me over to the Software Update panel in system preferences, which then gives me the error message seen in the screenshot below ("The requested version of macOS is not available").
For context, I'm trying to download the High Sierra installer on a 2019 MacBookPro that is running Big Sur, so that I can create a bootable installer to fix my 2017 iMac. That iMac - which I have Big Sur installed on - now runs as slow as a slug that's ingested concrete, so its unusable. I want to wipe it and install High Sierra so it has an OS close to the period when the iMac was manufactured, in the hope that it will become usable again.
Any suggestions from you or Apple Support would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The first issue is you cannot download a version of macOS older than what a Mac originally shipped with. So nothing earlier than Big Sur on a 2019 MacBook Pro. However, assuming the 2017 iMac is working, you could do an Internet Recovery install of Sierra 10.12 on it then upgrade to High Sierra.
How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support
The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.
With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install. For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.
Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

Thanks for that pointer about not being able to download an older version. Would have been helpful if Apple's error message said that instead of 'not available'. It's also bizarre that you can't use a newer Mac to help fix an older one.
If Apple OS installer files were still disk images instead of apps that run scripts, this wouldn't be an issue. In any case I'm puzzled why they wouldn't permit the downloading of an older OS and then run a script that blocks you from installing it on a new machine if you tried to do that by mistake.
I tried downloading the High Sierra installer from my iMac with the turgid Big Sur installation. Both attempts resulted in the pictured error message towards the end of the process.
So now I'm on to your last suggestion, Internet Recovery and attempting to put Sierra on it. I have a bootable Mojave installer, but that consistently leaves the iMac hard drive with overallocation errors that, in the six months I've been trying to fix this, have led to hard disk corruption problems in the end.
Really not satisfactory that Apple can't produce newer operating systems that run properly on machines that are 4 years old. The greater value for money story that Apple likes to tell customers is not borne out by my experience. In future I'll probably just keep the computer on the OS it came with.
The " Apple Licence Of Use Agreement " prohibits downgrading to a version older than the version the Computer Originally came installed as New.
Even if the User ( you ) have newer computer that came new with Big Sur, that Technically will disqualify this computer from Downloading and even making a Bootable Installer of say Catalina or anything older than Big Sur.

Not sure what you mean. For example among the Macs that I own, I'm running Monterey on a Late 2015 5K iMac without issue. I'm also running Big Sur on 2013 & 2015 Mac laptops.

The original question from amenkathy was not resolved. I have the same issue! Can anyone help?
amenkathy's issue was resolved. You cannot download High Sierra with a 2019 Mac. You cannot download any version of macOS that is older than the Mac it was shipped with.
please clarify - I have Sierra 10.12.6 I want to move up the ladder b starting with High Sierra. When Iget to the store the Open button on High Sierra yield the message that this installer is broken and cannot be used to install the upgrade. where else can I go to get it?
Hi there...
If you get a corrupted message...
Naw, not damaged, it's just that you have an old copy already in Applications, there are 2 cures...
Disconnect from the Internet & set the Date back to 2014, then you can run the Install MacsOS High Sierra App in Applications, so expired Certificates are not expired.
Or... trash the Install MacsOS High Sierra.app in Applications, empty trash & restart, then a new copy of a more recent version can be downloaded…
Thanks, yes i missed that when i scanned over the tech requirements. It was too much of a jump, but unfortunately I tried erasing and reinstalling mountain Lion and now am stuck with it saying it can't find all the necessary components to reinstall Lion. It won't even launch an operating system now. I think I need to figure out if I can set up a boot drive to install El Capitan or something. It's annoying I didn't wait to get your response! As I would have done things differently.
Ah ok. The reason I couldn't download the full version from the App store is because it's so old that it won't allow purchases/downloads from the app store and when I opened it on my iMac it was trying to install it on there, which obviously it can't because I'm running Big Sur.
Thanks for your response though.
Delete "Install macOS High Sierra" from the Applications folder then try again while in Safe Mode.
I tried that and it won't let me do it. It says I need to have 10.13 to be able to upgrade to 10.13.6. Is there another way to do it or am I doing it wrong?
thank you
