I have a new 27-inch mac. I set it up to use photographs for my desktop picture. The resolution is terrible. I didn't have this problem with my previous 27-inch mac. I have the settings exactly the same.

From your post it appears that you are seeing a low resolution version of your photos for your desktop picture.
Are you using iCloud Photos? Are your photos stored in iCloud or are they stored locally?
When using iCloud Photos, if Optimize Storage is enabled, a low resolution copy remains on the computer while the original high resolution version is stored in iCloud. More information about how this works is available here: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support
Before choosing the photo you want as the desktop, be sure the high resolution version is downloaded to the Mac.

That did the trick. Thanks for your help.
I exported them to a new folder and selected that folder to be my desktop pictures. Strange that I had to do this, right?
OK - there is a current bug in the display of pictures to the screensaver. This sounds different, but could be related.
Your best workaroud would be to export the pictures to a folder (select them, and then file>export) and add them to the screensaver from the folder.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know that iCloud would take my photographs automatically! I turned off iCloud and reimported the photographs, but they are still displaying with poor resolution. So that doesn't seem to have been the cause.
Do people not use family pictures for desktop images anymore? This is my first new mac in 10 years.
Yes, if I play a slideshow they're full resolution.
Even apple has bugs. They seem to take their own sweet time fixing them though.
