restoring to new phone but still use older phone

I got a new iphone today. It hasn't been activated yet with T-Mobile, my carrier. I still have my older current phone I use, but I connected my new phone to my computer to charge up and want to restore my current phones backup to my new one. The new phone still needs a SIM card. I just want to get it ready to use once I go visit T-Mobile to activate. Is this ok?

So I plan to use my current phone now, but coonected my new phone to my computer so I have the data on my new phone.

You will need to go through the activation process to be able to get to the point to be able to restore that backup. And the activation requires the SIM card. As you go through the activation process it will ask you if you want to restore from a backup of your older iPhone. You should also see a screen to use Quick Start as well if you have the two phones together. Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
