Downloaded Monterey update but when it restarted, got black screen with prohibited symbol.

I was having issued updating to Monterey as it said it “not compatible with this volume” so I looked online and read I had to change from HGS Journaled to APFS format. I did that in recovery mode, was able to download Monterey, but when I did it said it had te restart after downloading and a black screen came up with the 🚫 symbol and the message to check support apple macbook startup in the website.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

If your Mac starts up to a circle with a line through it

A circle with a line through it means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a macOS that your Mac can use.

A prohibitory symbol, which looks like a circle with a line or slash through it, means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a version or build of macOS that your Mac can use.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off.
Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold both Command (⌘) and R to start up from macOS Recovery.
While in macOS Recovery, use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk.
If Disk Utility found no errors or repaired all errors, reinstall macOS.
