"you do not have permission to access the requested resource" error

I have an iphone se, a recent ipad and a newish mac mini (all up to date ios versions); and I have home sharing turned on so that I can share music and video across the devices. The mini is on pretty much continuously, and has a large (400 artist) music library and a video library of similar size.

Using the music app, I can connect the iphone and the ipad to the libraries initially- but after some seemingly random period of time of 3 to 45min, I get the error in the title. All devices are signed into my apple id, and all seem to function normally otherwise. There seems no pattern associated with the error- devices can be on wifi or on cell, etc., and there's no discernible pattern on what is playing at the time.

Anyone else see this? Any fixes? I've looked through some old threads where this error is mentioned, but none look recent or particularly relevant.

Any ideas appreciated!

Hi bcs914.

Thanks for coming t Apple Support Communities for help today with Home Sharing. It sounds like the connection to the Music Library on your Mac mini loses connection at times.

You mentioned this happening on cellular. That would be expected since Home Sharing only works when the devices are on the same Wi-Fi networks.

Are any of the devices on a VPN or using security software?

Double-check the steps to set up here: Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices.

Let us know if the issue continues.

Have a fantastic day!

bcs914,

Thanks for getting back to us. It sounds like you have done some great troubleshooting. You have mentioned Apple Music. If you are a subscriber, you'd be accessing your Music library on all your devices with Sync Library and not Home Sharing: Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music.

However, if that still doesn't explain the issue, we'd suggest taking a deeper dive at Get Support.

Have a fantastic day!

Thanks for your kind response. None of the devices have security apps installed at present, and only one has ever used a VPN (the Ipad I'm currently using), but the VPN is never in use when I use Apple Music.

I read through the linked document, and don't find anything that could be a problem to my limited knowledge. All devices are signed in and authorized to my single Apple ID. I did change my id and password recently, but all the devices have been signed out and then back in with the new id /password, and all seem to be working correctly (all have made purchases, e.g.).

Later today I will try to turn off sharing on the mac mini and go thru the same set of steps to turn it back on (since home sharing was set up prior to the password change) and update this thread with results.

I should have noted in my original post that I also have two latest model apple TV devices on the same network that I forgot to check (also signed in to the same apple id) and apple music cannot even see the shared library whatsoever!). I will check them again as well.

Thanks again- just for the sake of being thorough, two things:

  • No, I'm not a subscriber, and I'm not interested in that at this time.

  • Also, I did turn off and start over on home sharing, and there's no difference in behaviour- I once again got the error in the title after 48 mins of use of Apple Music on my ipad.

I will contact support as you suggested.
