Purchase Sharing vs Purchase Funding Separation Please

When will Apple get the understanding that family purchase sharing should NOT mean Purchase funding?

Families should be able to independently control sharing existing purchases vs paying for new purchases by other members. It’s a really simple concept.

Family members should be able to fund their own transactions and request a family funded purchase if they want to use family funds, not have every purchase go through the organizer’s funding source. This seems like such a bone-head simple functionality.

This has been broken and anti-family friendly forever. Is there currently ANY traction on this within Apple?

Right now my teen daughter cannot use her Apple gift cards to purchase music for her Apple Music account without first turning off family sharing, and losing the ability to share iCloud+ space. Same with my spouse and subscriptions she is paid for through work. She has to completely disable purchase sharing to pay with her own source, then re-enable sharing.

Are we really the only family on the planet that thinks this should have been fixed eons ago??

Never said to turn off family sharing.

Turn off purchase sharing, not family sharing. Or, have the users add funds to their Apple ID or use gift cards as those funds are used first. Or, use family sharing as designed and be the adult organizer who manages all shared purchases. It's a really simple concept.

How to share purchases with your family - Apple Support

Which payment method is charged for purchases that family members make?

When Purchase Sharing is turned on, everyone's purchases bill to the family organizer's payment method.* If there's an issue with the payment method, the family organizer can update their payment method or add a new one.

If you're the family organizer and you don't want to share a payment method with your family, turn off purchase sharing. When purchase sharing is turned off, you can continue to share subscriptions like Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade. When Purchase Sharing is turned off, everyone must use their own payment method.

You have a valid point there. The current model is fine for one adult and a family group of minors, but not appropriate for a family group with several adults and an own income. I recommend to send a feature request to Apple using the feedback form. See Product Feedback - Apple

The feedback will be read by Apple, while the contributions here may be missed by the developer team.

muguy,

I know how to turn family sharing off!

Maybe re-read the question, as you clearly don’t understand the problem.

Family purchase sharing should NOT equate to family purchase funding as it currently is. Apple’s current system is not helpful for actual real functioning families. Just like your response. 🙄
