Switch airpods from apple watch back to my iPhone

I can’t connect my iphone to airpods while my watch is connected to it. I have to close Bluetooth and disconnected apple watch from my iphone to connect it to the airpods each time. I tired to fix this issue manually by selecting airpods on airplay but my iphone 13 pro max won’t respond at all..

I cant have both of them connect?!

According to the article you came from:

Switch your AirPods to another device

you should be able to automatically switch between the iPhone and watch (unless they are first generation),. If you followed all the steps in that article and you still can't the first thing I would try is to reset the AirPods:
