Boot in Safe Mode:

Apparently, the Mail app is not connecting to Google's mail servers. Ao, try adding this while in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, Login Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. I had the same issue and spent days trying to figure it out. Then changed my default browser from Chrome to Safari, then went through the process again. Solved it immediately! Was able to add the Google mail account into my Apple Mail once I logged into my Google account on Safari when it was made the default browser.

This was also the solution for me, also on Big Sur. As soon as the default browser was set to Safari instead of Chrome, it worked. (It's in System Preferences / General).

OK, I found a solution that worked for me (Big Sir BTW).

I changed default Browser from Chrome to Safari and it worked first time. Ironic that a Gmail sign in didn't work on Chrome I know but it worked for me.

Yours is the second report I have seen in a few days - and it also happened on a family member's Mac recently.

I resolved this by restarting the Mac and then the Gmail account was added to the computer. Perhaps this might also work for you?

Same problem here. Whenever I tried adding a new Gmail account - safari popped open but nothing happened.

The solution for me was to do change my default browser from Safari to Chrome. opposite situation ;-)

I'm having this exact same problem today - it's even a bit hard to explain - incredibly frustrating.

I have the exact same issue. Clicking on the GMail icon when trying to add an account opens the box with spinning wheel icon then opens the default browser (Chrome in my case). Chrome opens and shows the default opening page but never opens the Google login window.

I've tried in Safe mode but get the same result.

Also, once Chrome opens I can't switch to any other application, it just flicks right back to Chrome.

Frankly it's driving me nuts.

Good work... I suspect Chrome fhs a bad PW stored in it.
