verify email on apple id

I went on my settings on my computer and went into the apple id section and clicked "verify" next to my email. my settings screen went dark and now there is a bar with the apple logo on the left side. i cannot click out of settings and they have not sent me a verification email. does anyone know what to do to fix this?????
