Why System data is taking up half of my MacBook Air's SSD ?

It seems to me that the reply does not answer the question, and I have the same problem.

System Data, in this example, is taking up 112 GB, while the categories above comprise a far lower total.

Maybe this has something to do with old backups, old system files, external storage????
