Forgot Apple ID password when trying to use on new phone. Put in the trusted number, got text with code, used it but wouldn't verify - sat with that on screen for ages. Now it won't even use the number and says Verification Failed - There was a problem connecting to the server. Have tried putting the sim in the phone but that hasn't helped. Can't cancel out of it either as I reset the password online instead.

Some things you can try. Do you have access to another WiFi network where you can try? That has worked for several people.
Try a restart.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch *
Try a forced restart.
Reset Device. *
If necessary
Hard reset. -
Do a backup and try a factory reset. Then restore from your backup.
Backup - Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup. *
