How do I connect my laptop with airplay to apple tv 4k?

I used to be able to cast my MacPro laptop screen to my TV using Apple TV via Airplay. Since getting the 4k version it has stopped working.

I have already tried to set the display to the Apple TV in preferences>displays but it automatically switches back to off.

I have check the settings on the Apple TV and Airplay is ON. Access is set to everyone.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

TIA

From the Mac, AirPlay or Screen Mirroring should work the same for any model Apple TV.

Both devices need to be on the same home network.

Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Not everything can be streamed through AirPlay. Some content or apps may have restrictions (e.g. Mac DVD Player). What are you trying to AirPlay?

Can you AirPlay something as basic as the Mac Desktop? Then AirPlay itself is working.

Can you AirPlay e.g. YouTube web content through the AirPlay icon in the video controller? Then AirPlay itself is working.

What is your model Mac, and its version macOS? The location of the controls for screen mirroring have changed a bit with Big Sur and Monterey. The controls are now integrated into Mac Control Center.

I am trying to show whatever my laptop screen shows. This is how it worked before. It didn't matter what I was mirroring.

I use a MacBook Pro which is still running Mavericks. The reason for the old OS is for another discussion but it has been necessary to not upgrade until recently. I am hoping to update it to High Sierra which will run the apps I need. Beyond that they don't work.

I don't think the issue is the OS anyway. When I select the Apple tv in preferences it pops on then instantly pops off.
