Foreign sim and Apple ID

I’m travelling abroad and bought a local SIM card. I’ve kept my old number but recently I’ve stopped receiving SMS messages I need for security purposes. Do I need to update the number to the one allocated with my SIM, even though I’m not using it? If I update the number will that cause me all sorts of other problems?
