Weird 'hazy' grey border on iMac screen

hey, @luca4cmp, did you ever get an answer to your wonderings?

Cos I've just had the same thing happen on my 27" imac from 2012....

again, it's happened after waking from sleep mode all night, and took about 20 minutes to clear while I carried on using the machine. Then a couple of darker grey bands appeared, coming down a couple of inches from the top edge, but went away again.

I seem to remember this happened a couple of years ago, then never again..... ...until just NOW!

What's causing this - does anyone have any ideas about it?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

That is condensation forming between the display panel and front glass.

A few things that could help prevent condensation are

Shutdown the iMac at night.
Leave your central heat on, but lower at night.
Move your iMac to a warmer dryer place in your home or office.

While the display is considered a sealed or one piece unit, it is not a totally vacuum sealed unit which can in some cases let both moisture and fine dust in-between the layers.

Hi Den, thanks for your swift reply.

I came here from a previous discussion (thought I was adding my question but looks like it started all over again!) where I think condensation was dismissed due to the iMac being a sealed unit around the screen....

....and it's been in this same room for several years, where yes it gets a bit chilly at night but certainly not sub-zero!

Like the originator, luca4cmp, it only happened upon waking from sleep, and hasn't replicated it when starting from shutdown.

Perhaps I'll shut it down tonight and see in the morning....

Why d'you think that shutting it down might prevent condensation?

Cos surely if it's sleeping, I'd guess it retains a bit of warmth overnight, whereas if it's totally shut down, I'd have thought the whole unit would get colder?

but I ain't a scientist!
