migration assistant quit unexpectedly

I have 2 new mac book pro 2021, 14 and 16”. I am trying to transfer all contents from the 14 to the 16” using migration assistant. The 2 devices are connected via thunderbolt. After transferring around 400,

000 items it stopped with the above message (migration assistant quit unexpectedly). I am changing over my laptop for the bigger size and returning the smaller one, but am stuck as to what to do next. I have done this twice and it stops at exactly the same point (409,393) can anyone help???

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.2

Hello Rosi wdz,

It sounds like you're trying to migrate from one Mac to another, but it is failing to complete the transfer. We've got you.

Given the information, we'd say you've been following these steps: Move your content to a new Mac

With that in mind, we'd start with the very first step:

  1. Make sure both Macs are up to date. If needed, get updated: Update macOS on Mac
  2. After the Macs are updated, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable from both Macs.
  3. Restart both computers using the Apple menu > Restart.
  4. Then reconnect them using the Thunderbolt cable. Keep both connected to power and try starting Migration Assistant again.

If it continues to fail, do you have a backup using Time Machine? Have you tried to Restore your Mac from a backup yet?

Hoping to hear back, take care.
