Compressor makes my video files larger than the original why?

Hi fellow apple enthusiast's, this is my problem. Let me just say that it has been a few years since I've worked with videos, that said.......

I have a slideshow which I exported to my desktop from apple photos.... @t 640x360 to keep the file small.

The video duration is 21 minutes.

The file is only 218 MB

When I try to compress the video using compressor V4.6, it the files GROWS to 300MB, 3 gigas, 800MB

No matter what I try every time I try to compress the file it becomes larger!

I want to be able to upload this file to youtube, plus send it over messages.

I highly value your help with this.

Thank you

There are many parameters involved in determining the final size of a video: frame size, duration, codec, and bit rate all have an impact.

218 MB for 21 minutes seems a rather decent size.

You can reduce the bit rate, but check the output to see if the quality is acceptable.

For youtube, I say upload what you already have. You don't want to reduce the quality.

If you need a lower sized, lower quality version, make a new custom export, and reduce the bit rate:

1) Click the + sign at the bottom left, and choose New Setting

2) Selec MPEG-4 and give it a descriptive name, e.g.:

Click OK

3) Click the video pane on the right, set the Data Rate to "Custom" and adjust the value. Experiment.

Keep in mind that for a larger frame size (e.g. 1920x1080) you will also need a larger data rate.
