Verify your Account Type:
The account you are logged into... It is an administrator account? IF so, then you are an administrator, and all show work just fine.

Getting this File Back:
That error message shows that it is non-existent (or has been relocated). So, you need to reinstall the macOS to place it back in there. Thing is, you wouldn’t be able to do that without the administrator password. So, see if something at this post helps: rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone: No such file or directory - Apple Community
I have no problem logging as the sole user. But when I need the Admin username and Password to update, say, a printer driver, I can’t unlock the system with the right Admin password. In User list I am not the Admin.

Create the New Admin:
Yes. I agree: Create a new admin usern and password. See if you can then find out the name of the current one by going into System Preferences > Users & Groups. If you have nothing to fear of losing, then thrash the one you current have on there, if you never think you get back in. It’s you call.
I followed a lead to create new Admin username and password.
got to Terminal
when I tried —- rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
system says - No file found…
would have gotten me to a fresh start with new Admin…
Thanks for pointing out where the file was. Important pointer, given so many mistaken leads are there.
Really worked and I have established a new admin on my Mac.
Worked exactly as you said. I avoided lots of headaches.

You are welcome. Excellent job troubleshooting!👍
I am not the Admin. I need to update my printer software, but I don’t recall the Admin password that works.
when asked to :” Enter an administrator’s name and password to allow this.” , I have tried known username and passwords but it’s always rejected. I should just get new admin username and password.
