Adding a gmail (the horror) email account to my MacBook Air

I select Google - A small window opens saying it needs to authenticate via the browser - I click okay and then a spinning dial spins continuously and it never connects to the browser. I'm able to add this account to my phone, but not to my MacBook Air. I never get past the spinning dial.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.0

gmail setup I had gmail working on my Mac (11.6.8) but when i changed my gmail password the email client keeps asking me to authenticate via browser. When I open the browser nothing relating to gmail pops up., i.e. no where to go. Gmail still works fine (with new password) on iPhone and when using Chrome browser. It just isn't working with the Mac email client. I even deleted the account, thinking I could just set it up again, but I end up stuck in the same loop. Help, please.

I can't get beyond adding gmail to my apple mail program. The authentication window does not open. When trying to add gmail to my apple mail, I can't get the authentication window to open. Any solutions?
