Phone won’t permit an Apple ID or password and gives a ‘cannot connect to server’ message.

What do you mean that it will not permit an Apple ID? Is this a second hand phone?
Yes. The issue was that the phone would not accept the email address we were trying to add. This was because the email had been used on another Apple product.
My new issue is finding a way to access WhatsApp without adding banking info. Old iPhone stopped working so can't transfer any info to my new one. Grrrrrrr
