My son gave me a phone in the US. I brought it to Panama’ and it wants me to unlock it to use my sim. I have email and password. Can I do this?

You need to contact the previous cellular carrier (whom that device might be locked to) and ask them to unlock it, if you are eligible. See this support article too:--> How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier - Apple Support

If your phone is carrier locked, you need to contact them to get it unlocked. What is the exact error message that you get with your SIM card?
